Measuring Imaging Facility Impact

Online workshop

Measuring impact of imaging core facilities

Measuring the impact of your imaging facility may be challenging due to a large number of possible metrics that can be recorded, difficulties in measuring particular metrics, and not knowing the best software to measure the metrics. This workshop will focus on providing the participants with the information necessary to understand the topic of impact and how to measure it.

This workshop is jointly organized by Canadian Network of Scientific Platforms, Canada BioImaging, BioImaging North America and Global BioImaging.

This workshop will be delivered by Claire M. Brown (McGill University, Canada) and Laurence Lejeune (Canadian Network of Scientific Platforms, Canada).

We strive for regional and gender balance at our training events.

Description of the workshop:

This workshop consists of 3 sessions that take place one week apart starting on 17th of May.

Please note that successful applicants must attend all 3 sessions of this workshop.

Session #1:

Date: 17 May 2022, 8:00 PDT/11:00 EDT/17:00 CEST Duration: 2.5 hours

During this introductory session, the topic of measuring the impact of imaging facilities will be presented. The following topics will be explored: 1) the need to measure impact, why it is important and how to measure the impact of imaging facilities, 2) what are Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Socio-Economic Indicators (SEIs), 3) Global BioImaging Working Group on Societal Impact of Imaging Infrastructures, and 4) tools for measuring the impact. In addition, an interactive discussion will take place and a group case study of tracking the impact over time will be presented.

Session #2:

Date: 24 May 2022, 8:00 PDT/11:00 EDT/17:00 CEST Duration: 2.5 hours

During the second session of the workshop, the topic of Socio-Economic Indicators (SEIs) will be further explored. The following topics will be explored: 1) the importance of telling stories in the context of the mission of the imaging platform and the mission of the funders and other stakeholders, 2) how to tell the story of your imaging platform, 3) guidelines on making a video highlighting a success story.

Session #3:

Date: 31 May 2022, 8:00 PDT/11:00 EDT/17:00 CEST Duration: 2.5 hours

During the third session of the workshop, the topic of bibliometrics (tracking references, facility acknowledgements and publications, citations, citation index, etc.) will be explored in detail including a demonstration of existing software tools. In addition, a small cohort of participants would be selected to present their imaging platform success story videos and will be given constructive feedback from the group.
