Travel grants for Canada BioImaging-Global BioImaging: Train the Trainers course: Fundamentals of microscopy methods explored

Purpose

Regions that are under-served must be presented with fair and equitable opportunities to attend Global BioImaging training courses. The selection process will follow a scheme that maximizes the diversity and ensures equitable access globally. Our selection approach will maximize regional and national diversity amongst travel award grantees.

Equitable and diverse

Any eligible person around the globe is welcome to apply for a travel grant to attend the course.

In addition to regional diversity and further promoting dissemination of knowledge to a broader base, national and institutional diversity will be considered. The number of grantees from the same country will be limited and only one application may be selected from the same institution.

Prerequisites for application

  • You must be employed by a nonprofit research institution (institute, university, etc.)
  • Your day-to-day work must involve one or more aspects of image data, for example, image analysis, data management and/or data reuse
  • You work in imaging facility as an imaging facility manager or staff, as an image analyst providing image analysis as a service or work with image data management systems/workflows

Application

The travel grant application form requires the following:

  • Applicant's role in an institute/imaging facility
  • Applicant's role in their local, national and/or regional imaging community
  • How the applicant plans to disseminate the knowledge gained at this course
  • Limited personal information such as gender for the purpose of gender balance and anonymized reporting

Selection criteria

The selection process will be based on information obtained from the submitted applications. A selection committee will review all travel grant applications.

Each member of the selection panel will score each application based on the following:

1. Dissemination of the knowledge gained at the course (up to 5 points)

Higher scores will be awarded to applicants outlining how they would disseminate the knowledge gained at this course to their colleagues and how the knowledge gained would be used to improve their imaging facility.

2. Contribution to the local and/or national and/or regional imaging communities (up to 3 points)

Higher scores will be awarded to applicants outlining their contribution to their local and/or regional imaging community.

3. Applicant's role at their institute and/or imaging facility (up to 2 points)

Higher scores will be awarded to applicants who offer open user access, provide training to users and researchers at their institute.

4. Underserved regions (up to 2 points)

Applicants engaged in imaging communities not traditionally associated with high funding or resources will receive higher scores based on the UN report on Country Classification.

  • 0 points for developed economies countries (see Table A)
  • 2 points for countries with developing economies (see Table C)
  • 1 point for all other countries

The combined score awarded by all reviewers will be used to rank the applicants.

In the event when two candidates have an identical score, the tiebreaker will be resolved using the following in the order of:

  • The applicant comes from a country not represented by another successful applicant with a higher score
  • The applicant has the most significant potential to disseminate the knowledge gained at the course
  • The applicant is listed first alphabetically by surname

The remaining eligible applicants will be placed on the waiting list. Should a selected successful applicant not be able to attend the course, the next highest-ranked applicant on the waiting list will be offered the travel grant.

Travel grant details

The maximum amount provided per each travel grant is 2500 EUR

The travel grant covers the following eligible items:

  • Travel costs (air travel, public transportation)
  • Accommodation costs (e.g. hotel)
  • Visa application fees
